Embroidered Adulting Badges

Life is hard. We need to celebrate the little things and be proud of all our accomplishments. And sometimes that means putting them on a badge and wearing them proudly on our jackets, bags, etc. Learn how to make these Embroidered Adult Badges from materials such as repurposed jeans or leftover fabric scraps. You donโ€™t need to be an embroidery expert; weโ€™ll start with basic stitches and talk about way to embellish them with fancier stitches or other materials such as buttons and discarded costume jewelry.

Supplies to bring:

  • A needle and selection of thread (embroidery floss or sashiko thread)
  • Scissors
  • Pin backs or safety pins
  • Any fabric or adornments youโ€™d like to use

Some shared supplies will be available for class use.

Embroidered Meditation Scrolls

In a world of constant noise and over-commitment, it can be hard to find time to slow down. But it is also imperative for our well-being that we make time for ourselves and create ways to rest. In this class, weโ€™ll explore the meditative practice of slow stitching to learn simple ways to establish moments of quiet in our lives. Weโ€™ll learn different basic embroidery stitches and discuss the power of repetition of these marks. These scrolls will not be completed in class but instead will provide the foundation for a self-care practice that can be incorporated into your daily life. However, once complete they become stunning pieces that can be displayed or referred to as a reminder to slow down and take care of ourselves.

Supplies to bring: (some shared materials will be available in class)

  • Embroidery floss or sashiko thread
  • A strip of fabric for stitching (this can be the width and length of your choosing, but I recommend a fabric that is heavier than a lightweight cotton). Wet Paint sells 12oz and 7oz cotton duck canvas by the yard and 12ร—12 pieces of 7oz. cotton canvas.
  • Something to wrap your fabric around (a stick, spool/bobbin, or anything else)
  • Needle appropriate for your flow or thread. Wet Paint sells packs of embroidery needles in 2 sizes.

Weโ€™ll begin by constructing our cardboard accordion books, then practice ways to sketch out ideas for our story and ideas for how to bring it to life in our books. Creating Calm Through Collage

We are constantly surrounded by the noise and turbulence of the world around us, and it often leaves our minds buzzing and drowns out our creative voice. But using artistic techniques, such as collage, can help to restore moments of quiet and calm and teach us to turn destruction into creation. Using a variety of papers, including scraps from our everyday lives, we will learn how to harness the power of tearing things apart and reassembling them to create both beauty and calm while also finding messages of meaning in the process. We will also discuss ways to work this practice into our daily lives so that when we need a moment of calm, we can use whatโ€™s around us to create a space for it.

Includes collage papers and shared use supplies, please bring a sketchbook/art journal.

Junk Journals, Commonplace Books & Scrap Diaries (day-long class)

Have you heard about the junk journal trend but arenโ€™t sure what they are or what the difference is between art journals, junk journals, commonplace books and scrap diaries? Spend a day immersed in the world of paper and boundless creativity as we explore these different types of books and learn how to make them, how to use them and how to integrate them into our daily lives. Weโ€™ll collect papers that would otherwise be considered โ€œjunkโ€ and turn them into a landscape where our creativity can run wild.

  • Something sturdy to use as a cover for your book (I recommend a used Kraft mailing envelope or a carboard food box)

  • Any supplies you want to use inside your book (collage, markers, etc.)

Using Photos & Magazine Images in Our Art Journals

Using images in our art journals provides inspiration, but it can feel challenging to make them our own. In the class weโ€™ll explore ways to use images from photos and magazines in three unique styles: image transfers, drawing and collage. Each one will give us a different way to play with the image, change it to make it our own and create interesting ways to engage with the image on the pages of our art journals. And weโ€™ll also talk about ways to combine some of these techniques to really have fun with these images and to craft a whimsical, creative story on the page.

Supplies to brings: (some shared supplies will be available in class)

  • Adhesive (glue sticks will be available in class)
  • A sketchbook or art journal
  • Magazine images
  • Photographs or printed images
  • A roll of packing tape and/or clear contact paper

Embroidered Mandalas

Mandalas are a powerful artistic form used in meditation and healing practices. Using a process of hand-stitching with thread and fabric, we are going to learn ways to use this process not only to slow down, but also to deeply connect with our work. The finished pieces will also serve as a tactile experience, allowing us to read them with our fingers as well as our eyes. Weโ€™ll also work to embrace the โ€œmessyโ€ part of our lives represented by imperfect stitching and loose threads on torn fabric. The completed pieces will be packed with mesmerizing, tactile beauty as well as deep personal meaning. This practice is an opportunity to release perfection and spend time enjoying the process of creating, healing and letting go.

Supplies (some fabric scraps, needles and thread will be available for class use):

  • Any fabric scraps, yarn or adornments (buttons, beads, etc.) youโ€™d like to use
  • An embroidery hoop (8โ€ or 10โ€ is recommended, if you want to work small, bring a couple)
  • A piece of background fabric that will fit inside your hoop (allow for extra room to finish your hoop)
  • A piece of felt large enough to cover the back of your hoop
  • Needle and embroidery floss
  • Sewing scissors

Neurographic Art

Neurographic Art is a free-flowing, organic artform that creates a calm, focused and mindful experience in our bodies and brains while crafting a beautiful and inspiring piece of abstract artwork on the page. This class is intended to be a slow, immersive experience which provides the opportunity to press pause on stressors and spend time focusing on your own needs and well-being. Weโ€™ll begin by learning the history of neurographic art and then spend time practicing the techniques and learning ways to apply them in a variety of ways to our own lives and art practices.

Supplies to bring (some shared use supplies will be available):

Gelli Print Collages

Inspiration for collage fodder can come from anywhere โ€“ junk mail, found papers, the insides of business envelopes โ€“ but sometimes the most interesting papers are the ones we make ourselves. And more often than not, the best papers are the ones we thought were a โ€œmistake.โ€ Gelli plate printing is a fun way to make unique and intriguing designs quickly and easily, but what do you do with the ones that you donโ€™t like or you think were a โ€œgel plate fail?โ€ Tear them up and turn them into something else! These โ€œmistakesโ€ will become the inspiring starting point for a whole new pile of collage fodder for your art journals, planners or anywhere else you create collage. Weโ€™ll discuss ways to use them for abstract collages, how to cut them into shapes and decorate them with gel pens/paint markers and look at ways we can give these pieces of paper a whole new life.

Supplies to Bring:

Shared use supplies include:
Some craft acrylic paint (if youโ€™d like to use a different acrylic paint you may bring your own), Copy paper and some other various papers, a few gel plates, brayers and stencils.

Fabric & Paper Snippet Rolls

These rolls are not only a great way to use up all those little bits youโ€™ve been saving, but they end up being gorgeous and tactile assemblages of inspiration and memory that can either be displayed or used for another project. Weโ€™ll discuss ways to create these rolls from paper, fabric and a combination of both, as well as how to store them, display them and repurpose them into even bigger projects.

  • Sewing scissors
  • A pen/notebook for any notetaking

Watercolor & Collage Mandalas

This practice is an opportunity to release perfection and spend time enjoying the process of creating, healing and letting go.

We will also discuss how to draw inspiration from the everyday world around us to add color, marks and patterns to our artwork.
