The Art of Noticing
Noticing is perhaps the most powerful tool in our artistic toolkit. It is also perhaps one of the hardest to employ because it requires us to slow down and pay attention. In a world where our attention is a valuable commodity, there are a lot of people/places/devices fighting for it.ย But for three hours, we are going to say NO to all these distractions, learn how to slow down, and find ways to both record the interesting things we discover through this process, but also how to use them in our art and creative process.ย Weโll pull inspiration from the natural world, overlooked treasures we see every day and some other sources we may have never considered.
Please bring a sketchbook or art journal, a drawing pen and something to add color (watercolors, markers, and/or colored pencils) to class. Some shared supplies will be available for use in class.

Altered Book Art Journaling
Sketchbooks and journals are great for art journaling, but the blank white page can also be intimidating. Vintage books, novels, cookbooks and childrenโs books can also be used for art journaling and provide a variety of paper options, inspiring graphics and illustrations, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Weโll begin by selecting a book to use, then weโll learn some simple ways to begin filling the pages with our own artwork.
Bring a book to alter. Some books will be available if you donโt have one.

Weโll begin with the Gelli plate basics, including care and how to use them. Then weโll explore different ways to use the plants, flowers, trees and weeds in your house and yard as masks and stencils on the plate to make a variety of beautiful monoprints.
Supplies to bring:
- A gelli plate
- A brayer
- Any leaves or plants youโd like to use for printing
Some shared supplies will be available for class use.

Cloth Book Art Journals
Art journals are a place to turn our creativity loose and explore both our ideas and our supplies, but they donโt need to be limited to paper pages. Sometimes we need the soft feel of fabric on our fingers and the slow process of stitching to express the emotions and visualizations in our hearts and minds. Together weโll explore the world of fabric books, and weโll look at several different structures to use as a framework for our own textile and thread journals. We wonโt focus on perfectly constructing our books, but instead will allow space for wild creativity to have free reign on our messy and unique pages.
Please bringย a selection of fabric to use for the inside pages of your book (you may want to bring a yard of fabric (tightly woven linen, cotton, or utility fabric) and then cut it down once you decide on a size for your book). You will also need something to use as a cover (a heavier fabric, such as canvas, or if you prefer a sturdier cover, you can use an old book cover with the pages removed), fabric scissors, needles and thread. Some extra needles, embroidery floss, and fabric scissors will be available for shared use in class.ย

Embroidered Meditation Scrolls
In a world of constant noise and over-commitment, it can be hard to find time to slow down. But it is also imperative for our well-being that we make time for ourselves and create ways to rest. In this class, weโll explore the meditative practice of slow stitching to learn simple ways to establish moments of quiet in our lives. Weโll learn different basic embroidery stitches and discuss the power of repetition of these marks. These scrolls will not be completed in class but instead will provide the foundation for a self-care practice that can be incorporated into your daily life. However, once complete they become stunning pieces that can be displayed or referred to as a reminder to slow down and take care of ourselves.
Supplies to bring:ย (some shared materials will be available in class)
โEmbroidery flossย (Wet Paint sells DMC brand floss) or sashiko thread
-A strip of fabric for stitching (this can be the width and length of your choosing, but I recommend a fabric that is heavier than a lightweight cotton).ย Wet Paint sells 12oz and 7oz cotton duck canvas by the yard andย 12ร12 pieces of 7oz. cotton canvas.
-Something to wrap your fabric around (a stick, spool/bobbin, or anything else)
-Needle appropriate for your flow or thread. Wet Paint sells packs ofย embroidery needlesย in 2 sizes.

The Illustrated Journal
How many times have you told yourself โIโm not an artist, I canโt draw?โ And how many times has that prevented you from doing the creative activities that you love and that bring you joy? In this class, I will share my journey to creating my own illustrated journals and show you the journals I never imagined Iโd make (and that very few people have ever seen). Then weโll talk about what makes a journal โillustratedโ and different ways to add your own personal drawings and creations to your books. And once weโve built up the courage, weโre going to give ourselves permission to break through the barriers of โI canโtโ and put pen to paper in our own journals so that you can create a space for doing what you love. You will not need to share your work in this class (or to anyone at all if you choose not to), these books are a safe space for you to create whatever you would like and to take a chance to bring your imagination to life on the page.
Supplies to bring:
- A journal or sketchbook
- A waterproof pen or your favorite drawing tool(s)
- Something to add color (watercolors, water-soluble crayons, markers, etc.)
- Any ephemera or collage material youโd like to use (optional)
Some shared supplies will be available for class use.

Collage Play in Three Styles
Collage is a relaxing, expressive and playful art form and there are so many ways to approach creating these pieces. In this class, weโll focus on three styles of collage: patchwork, minimal and spontaneous.
Spontaneous โ the idea of needing to put the perfect piece of paper in the perfect place can inhibit us from creating collages, so in this lesson, weโll learn ways to work quickly and instinctively to build organic collages in the moment. Weโll play with snippet rolls and also talk about how junk journals provide the perfect medium for spontaneous collages.
Patchwork โ weโll pull ideas from different forms of quilt and textile designs to inspire our own paper patchwork creations.
Minimal โ sometimes we get so lost in the idea of filling a page that we forget about the beauty and power of white space. Weโll use only a few pieces of paper per collage to not only embrace white space but also tap into the inspiration of limiting our supplies.
Supplies to bring:
- A sketchbook or art journal with blank pages (you can also bring a junk journal, but youโll need something with blank pages too).
- Any of your favorite collage materials
- If you have a favorite pair of scissors or adhesive, please bring those as well.
Some shared collage materials, glue sticks and scissors will be available for use in class.

The Interactive Journal
Do you remember flipping through pop-up books as a kid and being mesmerized by the pages that pulled out, pieces that spun and edges that folded over? Weโre going to bring that childhood magic back to our art journals by learning how to add elements to make our books truly interactive. Weโll play with collage, painted papers, washi tape, brads and more. Youโll go home with a book that you canโt stop flipping through.
Supplies to bring:
- A journal, sketchbook, or altered book
- Brads
- Washi tape
- Collage materials
- Scissors
- Glue stick
Some shared supplies will be available for class use.

Relaxing Watercolor Circles
As creatives, it can be easy to get stuck in the mindset of creating art for others, but itโs important to remember the power of the artistic process for our own self-care. Using watercolors as our guide, weโll release expectations and let our creativity be free to flow. We will begin by simply creating circles and exploring color, then will continue to build onto this practice with doodling and paper cutting. This class will focus on the process rather than the product and is meant for creatives of any level.
Please bring a set of watercolors, a brush and a pad of watercolor or mixed-media paper.ย There will be some shared use supplies.
